There are many definitions for peace education and all of them highlight that peace education develops values, attitudes, mindsets, skills, behaviors and knowledge to live in harmony with oneself, others and our natural world.
World Citizen defines peace education through Five Peace Actions, which serve as our shared language and a framework for co-creating just cultures of peace.
Peace education is for and about peace.
A just and peaceful world is learned, practiced and nurtured. Peace education equips people at all ages and stages of life with the mindsets, skills, attitudes and values to cultivate just, secure and thriving communities.
Children and future generations deserve a healthy planet free of war and violence. True peace is not just the end of violence—it is the presence of empathy, respect, justice and dignity. Peace education explores what is AND what could be, thereby cultivating hope.
We all live in connection with each other and our environment. The capacity to work and collaborate across cultures, to listen deeply and engage with the diversity of the human and more than human world with openness, care and compassion is crucial for lasting peace.
Conflict is part of life, but violence does not have to be. We all benefit from the ability to communicate effectively, resolve disagreements and navigate challenges without causing harm.
Our well-being encompasses mental, physical, emotional, financial and social health. Finding meaning, purpose and our beliefs also shape our well-being. Feeling safe in our environments is equally important. Our well-being is both unique to us as individuals and happens collectively – let us deepen resilience and thrive!
Justice and peace are deeply interconnected. The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals provide a shared blueprint for equitable peace and prosperity now and into the future – for humans and the more than human world. Environmental and social justice IS peace. Without the presence of justice, peace is unlikely to be sustained.
Anchored by the Five Peace Actions, each of our small actions can co-create big, lasting changes. Our choices ripple outward and shape the culture of our families, communities, workplaces, classrooms and institutions. Imagine if we all tried to live by the Five Peace Actions, what might our world look, feel and be like in the future?
